Aspergillus

Aspergillus is a common genus of fungi with over 185 species, some of which can cause opportunistic infections in humans. This fungus can be found outdoors in soil, plants, and decaying matter, as well as indoors in household dust and building materials. What's concerning is that certain species can produce mycotoxins, leading to a host of health issues.

The resulting infectious disease caused by Aspergillus is known as aspergillosis. Although it can affect any healthy individual, it's most prevalent in people with asthma, cystic fibrosis, or weakened immune systems. Symptoms of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis include wheezing, coughing, fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath, while invasive forms can spread to other organs and have been linked to building renovation or construction. It's imperative to be aware of this fungus, its potential risks, and how to prevent infection.
